Stadtgruen #40: Gruen #24: elektronischerGarten - Garten EP

Comment from Stadtgruen-Site:

Welcome to world's first Electronic Garden fair, exploring the daytime miracles of cultivated spaces in bleeps and bytes.
It will be shown that warmth and harmony can now be achieved with today's digital methods. Technology, in our understanding, must not intend to replace nor diminish nature—it gives us opportunity to put it into an aesthetically pleasing shape, and to intently work on a balanced environment. These thoughts are the basis for the acoustic exhibition, whose goal is to redifine classic ideas by reconstructing natural coherences in electronic sound design.
The Electronic Garden is decidedly modern, but it is not a novelty of modernism. You will not hear the latest synthesizer news, but you will hear new possibilities of creating laid-back, positive electronic music.

Mixotic #110: Frosty - Netlabel Mixtape Vol.3

Comment from Mixotic-Site:
This is hot minimal shit... twisted, energetic, hallucinogen and synapse blasting. Frosty is kicking the dance floor, the crowd is getting overdosed, holy party sweat is dropping down from the ceiling. The excess is starting here right now.

Thinner #100: Various Artists - 100

Comment from Thinner-Site:

obviously reaching the century mark in any endeavor is a milestone and is cause for celebration. in the case of netlabel thinner, it′s release number 100 and this calls for a compilation to celebrate this special occasion. and there′s another reason to celebrate - the compilation also marks the relaunch of the thinner netlabel. so here′s an opportunity to hear an aural digest of thinner′s past and present and to have a glimpse into it′s future. a most fitting way to bring this year to a close and serve as an impetus for the new year.
simply titled "100", the compilation brings together thirteen artists who exemplify the thinner sound. many of the contributors are renown thinner artists and/or have strong associations with the label, and several artists have only recently made their first appearance on the thinner. whether established or new, each of these artists does his part in epitomizing what thinner music is all about while, at the same time, etching themselves into the minds of the listeners as they dish out an assortment of top-notch electronic music embodying such genres as dub (and its many dub-inspired manifestations), minimal house, minimal techno, and unique fusions of dub, house, and techno. an assortment of ambiances are to be found here ranging from laidback lounge to dance-floor friendly.
veer gets the album off to a modish start with some classic dub that includes spoken word and vocals. calming things down with some slow-moving, bass-laden, atmospheres, daniel blomqvist presents his experimental take on the traditional dub sound. tracks 3 - 6 show thinner′s more minimal techno side not only with contributions by veteran thinner artists unit 21 and benfay but also a collaboration between jason corder and pheek working together as social system and new face to the thinner roster, one daniel herrmann performing as trace, who dishes out some strong vocal-laden techno. sensual physics sets the mood for tracks 7 - 11 which delve heavily into the minimal/deep house sound featuring well known artists brian kage, epsilonlab label founder eloi brunelle, and das kraftfuttermischwerk not to mention a track from the mysterious recent thinner newcomer laura palmer. as "100" nears its conclusion, off the sky and gyges present a rather unclassifiable track of crunchy, laidback experimental environments before the album makes full circle and transitions back to the signature thinner sound of the beginning with a closing piece by deluge who has composed a beautiful track of organic dub accentuated with acoustic samples.
so celebrate along with thinner as it reaches a new landmark in it′s existence by downloading "100" and immerse yourself in the thinner experience.

Test Tube #99: entia non - distal

Comment from Test Tube-Site:

«Another personal favorite of 2007 comes from the far away Australia. James McDougall a.k.a. Entia Non possesses the rare talent of putting together seemingly ordinary field recordings in a way that they sound to always have belonged together. If you enjoyed My Fun 'Idyll EP' release you'll love 'Distal'. James manipulates found sounds using ambient electronica techniques, tape reels and vinyl records into the most beautiful soundscapes you'll be able to hear. 'Watching the paint dry' is one of the best here, with sampled voices scattered amidst soft humming tones that sound like distant lost ships at sea. Beautiful stuff. 'A Winter Plateau' is another great track. A lot more into the 'nostalgia' theme than the previous ones - which is a recurrent theme when it comes to ambient music - but also very uplifting. Sparse real world here and there, but always embraced by a warm blanket of soft light. Makes us want to cuddle around a fireplace in a winter night with a cup of hot chocolate in our hand. Closing track 'Above' is a real gem. Runs for a little over ten minutes and covers mostly sci-fi soundtrack territory, which is something of a personal favorite around here. Could have been in Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' soundtrack and it would fit like a glove. James is a really talented musician who should not go unnoticed for he makes really amazing music capable of putting us into various states of dreamscape modes. With the perfect drug this can open portals to distant worlds too.
James released a previous album on the infamous CDR label U-COVER called 'Inter Alia'. If you enjoyed what you have listened here you should go and buy it immediately, because it is a limited edition. Also, keep your eyes peeled for another Entia Non album here at test tube, somewhere in 2008. Thanks for listening!» - Pedro Leitão

Test Tube #98: The Turtle - Hyper Riot

Comment from Test Tube-Site:

«Here's another one hailing from the United Kingdom. Jon Weinel is a native british musician and brings us this collection of tracks called 'Hyper Riot'. Jon reclaims his work to be mostly influenced by flashcore and breakcore, whatever the hell that is, but judging from his myspace there is a lot of stuff to be accounted for as well. It's not unusual to see Venetian Snares there on the list because that was one the few names that came to mind when I first listened to some of this tracks. There are a lot of threads to pick here, and they all connect to one another. There are references to Dubstep too, perhaps not on all of the tracks but I found some of the key elements both in the 'fast' tracks and in the 'slow' tracks. Speaking of which, the 'fast' tracks, the hardcore ones, are of course the shorter ones but they carry a lot of references inside them and sometimes they sound like two or three different pieces put together as they change tempo from start to end several times. 'Pacman's Psychedelic Meltdown' sounds exactly as it's called: a video-game soundtrack gone bad, too much bpm's resulting in the CPU's meltdown. A classic.
Halfway into the release and we get first contact with the ambient tracks, kind of like one of Jon's regular tracks stretched to its limits and spanned into five times the regular lenght. Slowed down hardcore for you experimental music lovers. 'At The Drive In Play Their Video-Games' is another electro pop classic, ready for the dancefloor. If you're into 8bit electro/techno and experimental psychedelic soundtracks, you'll love The Turtle and his 'Hyper Riot' release.»

NoTM: Thinner #85: Das Kraftfuttermischwerk - Eingang Nach Draußen

Comment from Thinner-Site:

The fourth Thinner release in 2006 once again establishes a longplayer since Ronny and Nico from Kraftfuttermischwerk kept sending new tunes on and on. So decision has been made to compile an album out of material we had been sent instead of an EP.
Their beautiful songs consist of dreamy melodies and lush electronic grooves. A certain sense of melancholy and fragile romance lays underneath all songs. And then, additional playfulness and easy dubs are the ingredients to provide sensual listening at its best. Though worth 71 minutes of music, the album can be described as a colourfully textured chapter of slowly morphing freeform electronic downbeats with a deep sense of introspection and solitude.
It all begins with 'Elbufer', a minimal brainer with melancholic undertones. The follow up 'Tischtennis im Regen' is a sparkling breeze and easy laidback groover within a peacefulatmosphere. The next songs direct to 'Gesagt, Getan', a rather loose drift through spacey terrain. Figure the mellow melodies. But even more spaced out is 'Give It To Me Slow' with its bending background pads and accompaning 808 hats, making it perfect for the very early morning hours.
The gradual transition within this album comes with 'Mikro', which sets a new marker. 'Wolkenbruch' comes up with heavy cloudy layers and earthy downbeats. 'Schleifsteine' then is on the 808 side again with minimal beats and sparse spheric pads. One of their most recent works is 'Schluss Mit Lustig' with unusual thin and light breaks. The album finishes with a remix by the ever prolific Transient (Carl Martin), who adds slightly shifted perspectives to the original 'Tischtennis im Regen'. Well done!
All in all, we hope you enjoy these imaginative 71 minutes of music for the mind. Let the journey unfold!

NoTM: Thinner #70: VA - Crossways 3LP

Comment from Thinner Site:

Initially the motivation behind our new compilation was to build a sequel to the 2003 ‘Silent Season Dub’ compilation – to blend warm ambient with minimal dub concepts. But during the phasis of collecting tracks we figured that this compilation will turn out more experimental, more rough than than the reference. So we decided to put things into a new context, that would either underline the variety of concepts but also stand for each artists own formular of sound: 'Crossways’.
Herein, electronic music with rather minimal rhythmpatterns are crossed with spheric ambience, in different moods, different slopes and different colours. The listener is able to find warm ambient pieces like 'Warm Night Lullaby' by Transient or more dubbed out ambience with Zen Savauges 'Sunken Streetlights'. You can lose yourself in the organic cycles of Boris Heizmann's 'Azure' or drift along with 'Scrap of Truth' by Selffish. But If you feel like enjoying some darker felt material then you'd like to explore the realms of Sgnl_Fltr’s chamber dub in 'All Form' by or listening to the crickets resting in Kenneth Kirschner’s ‘June 8, 2003 (excerpt)’. Generally said, if you’re interested in the contemporary minimal electronics of 2005 you’ll definately find the one or other piece within this compilation that will suit you fine.
As the music crosses the flash artwork of this releases does so, too – if you reload the page you’ll figure changing background pictures of the cover artwork. The pictures were taken in several countries where Joerg (Digitalverein) has performed in a Thinner context. Note that this compilation is split into 3 parts, each part about 60 minutes of length. If you want to enjoy the compilation mixed then you can download the Crossways Mix by Selffish.

NoTM: Thinner #50: VA - I Like To Listen!

Comment from Thinner Site:
Compilations are usually dedicated to rather special moments – like in this case, where things are set to celebrate the 50th release of the Netlabel “Thinner”.
On this Compilation you’ll find some renowned Thinner-Artists (who have new material in the pipeline for 2004), and some new artists, for which the Compilation offers a fitting frame to groove themselves into the brains of the listeners. Musically, the intercontinental voyage starts with Jason Corders “Serotone”; a crisp Minimalhouser that works with funky guitar licks interacting with chimes. Digitalis from Bern/Switzerland give us a window-clear preview with “China Hope” for their upcoming Thinner Album for 2004. Martin Jarl, Johan Fotmeijer and Johan Skugge are members of the swedish Mitek posse around Mikael Stavostrand. Besides the upcoming releases by Fotmeijer and Skugge on Thinner, they have new albums and 12'' in the pipeline for this year.
Dialogue from Bern have just released on Trapez, and because of Niels Jensen as a reknown artist on Thinner, it was about time to welcome his “Dialogue” Alias on our label. Benfay hits the bang with his dry-rocking “EM33”. We’ll see whether his Thinner-Album in February will become as uncomprimising as this clean submission.
From Northern Ireland we welcome Tristen Polar on Thinner, who will have a bigger EP 2004 after a string of upcoming 12''s on wellknown Minimalhouse Labels. His submission “Model Citizen” is a tracked-orignal “Splatterhaus” Cut, how Tpolar uses to categorize them. For this track he cooperated with Clive Kells.
Selffish is a bit more laidback with lots of cycling effects,in this concrete, piece “Cheer Up” while Eloi Brunelle sets the floor with “Honeygroove”. Accordingly Pheek dives into more functional deep sea with his Hommage to Neuchatel, station of his European tour in Summer 2002. It’s a pleasure to see Dennis DeSantis on Thinner again after a while, same as we welcome Joerg Schusters project “Sensual Physics”, after his other other appearances being Digitalverein and Lufth.
Finally the circle is closed by krill.minima from Dortmund, whose rather lush, delayed vocal-whispered track “Sleeping or Awake” is dedicated to more intimate moments.
Dear listeners and supporters, thank you for a great time so far and enjoy us on our Canada/North American Minitour in March.

Broque #36: Nils Hoffmann - Kurz und Klein E.P.

Comment from the Broque-Site:
Nils Hoffmann is a devil of a fellow in music. He plays various instruments, among them guitar and piano. He lives in Hamburg and he was in his life also concertmaster, composer of chamber music and also tenor and bass. Simultaneously he works as a teacher for music, plays in a rockband and is interested in electronic songs. And so we get a real all-round mixture of Techno, Swing, Jazz, Pop and Rock - out of all proportion. We can only present an extract of his work.

NoTM: Thinner #47: Marko Fürstenberg - Gesamtlaufzeit EP

Comment from Thinner-Site:
Marko Fürstenberg is a well known and long-time Thinner Act, who has been releasing there continously for 2 years. Having released 3 EPs and performed numerous Live shows, his debut Thinner-Long player is well overdue.
"Gesamtlaufzeit“ was produced between March and September 2003, thanks to his laptop, completly mobile - every song in a different environment where Marko resided this year (between his stay in Canada, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and his residence Thüringen/Germany.) . A diary, converted to music with every location producing new impressions and creating diverse sample ressources. Marko is the kind of person searching for natural sounds, between campfires crackles, and rolling obstacles to give his tracks a certain identifying warmth.
One can listen to the process of Fürstenbergs muscial maturity , that is obvious by the versatility and detailed harmonic moods on this album. The tracks circle around Dubhouse in the broader sense - with rambling pads and endless modulated ambient spheres, tight Groove monsters are created, underlayed with compressed bassdrums whenever appropriate. Every track contains a certain grade of emotion - relating the dedications of the tracknames, that reflect on prevailing local circumstances.
Every track has been scenically arranged and on top of it recorded live and direct. And so we are happy together with Marko to present his album in the very near future. There wouldn’t be a better season than Winter for his music.

NoTM: Thinner #14: Digitalverein - Zu Hause²

Comment from Thinner-Site:
Joerg Schuster is a laptop musician who transforms his inspiration, which he catches either from the old-traditioned industrial buildings, but also with its energy-saving windmills futuristic landscapes of Dortmund, located in the central Ruhr-area. Since Joerg is also photographing and into videoart it was no question that he created something special with the Flash5 intro.
"Zu Hause2" is his first album as "Digitalverein", which is his other project besides "Sensual Physics" on Source-Records.com. The difference between both projects is the more deep dub-affinity on Digitalverein, while Sensual Physics focuses more on danceable dubhouse around 127 BPM.
The opener "Der Heimat Tiefe" is dedicated to his local living place. Dusty hihats mark the steam coming out of the chimneys while the deep pads and subtle chipchords wrap the smell of hard and sweaty work, which workers have to afford in the mines. "Winterdumpf" has been produced early this year, while coldness and snow fell off the clouds. Distant delay stabs, claps and fading strings mark the snowy path. In the third track "3rd Und 6dis" Digitalverein shows his calm and melancholic side. Chords like weeping willows create a very melancholic mood i think, though Digitalverein says its still positive. The song is dedicated to his 3 year old son. On "Dub Sex" he becomes solid with well structured working chords n stabs and a shuffling basskick which makes your head nodding to the once again deep groove. "Warme Schicht" is maybe the best song here designed for chillout environments with its wide cutoffed and reverbed scapes. Very freezing, almost polar atmospheres and in best Thule Iceland fashion. "Tiefer ins system" starts also with notched and hissy pads, deep dub chords and shuffled shakes construct another dusty tune. With "Treppe Nach Unten" Digitalverein fires a furious final with a dubstomper rocking the clubs, marching bassdrums, shuffling hihats, pointed snares and sounds from steam engine locomotive go the straight direction until bended sunny strings fade out the track in glamour. As bonus we enclosed the Digitalverein liveact of the Mekka festival brings tunes released on his Sensual Physics album on Source Records, his first appearance for Thinner on Thinnerism01 and some unreleased tracks.

Serein #14: Muhr - Poussière

Comment from Serein-Site:
Number fourteen at Serein marks the most welcome return of Muhr, the man responsible for the first release in the Serein catalog many moons ago. Whilst Muhr has contributed many tracks to other labels in the interim, we're honoured to present his latest offering, which may be his most confident effort yet. Poussiere (meaning 'dust') is very much a development of a sound Muhr has been exploring for some time, the undercurrents of previous offerings are present (notably 'we are desolved' and 'la chute du romantisme en ballades' released at Miasmah), but to my mind Poussiere reaches beyond these - the music is raw, unshackled and full of angst that grips you from the off. By no means an easy listen, Poussiere is an album that toys with your emotions, one moment lifting you above the clouds with beautiful string arrangements and toy melodies, the next dragging you down into a suffocating world of thrash guitar and dense drones. This is a beast that will take several listens to tame, and you owe it to yourself to do so.

Sonic Walker Mix #31: DJ L’Embrouille - Netlabel Mix for Week 36

Comment from Sonic Walker-Site:
I am just back from a one week vacation in beautiful Brittany and this is the right moment to present a new netlabel mix from our French DJ l’embrouille, who lives in Brittany with his family. As always he had a good look at the latest netlabel releases, which he presents in a stunning techno mix of almost two hours.

12rec #42: bernier & trottier - objet abandonne en mer

Comment from 12rec-Site:
I got in contact with Canadian Nicolas Bernier when I wrote a review for his recent solo-release "Ailet l'eau faille by" at No Type-Netlabel. He ordered a bunch of CDrs and after some email chatting, he told me about a special project he's been working on. Nicolas teamed up with Montreal Folk- and improvisational guitarist Simon Trottier for some kind of a concept EP dealing 'bout a stranded objet abandonne. They jammed with acoustic and electric guitar, laptop and toy piano, diverse stringed instruments, percussion and microphones. Being familiar with Nicolas' work under his own name and as part of the “Milliseconde Topographie” -series, I was very curious what this promissing duo would sound like. After weeks of careful yet extensive post-production, the outcome blow both our minds.
The “Objet abandonne en Mer”-EP consists of four tracks with the title track being sub-divided in parts one to three. Opener “Harmattan” starts with a loop of rhythmically ordered glitches. Two entangled layers of acoustic guitar burst in, the slide-guitar rises and invokes an intense feeling of being lost. Bow and synthesizer replace the slide until an acoustic guitar introduces a simple Folk-melody. “Objet abandonne en Mer” is dominated by diverse field-recordings and crackling glitches. The feeling of being lost created in the first song is altered to a vague idea of rolling with the waves. The electro-acoustic cacophony of the introduction gives rise to a calm guitar melody. For the end, a thousand small Herzog-style guitars arise and consume the spectrum 'till single tones and chords begin to establish on top.
The third track opens with a nice Blues-motive on electric guitar and Nicolas' trademark noises. The initial melody disappears in reverb while a diffuse second layer gains contour beneath the surface. Just before the 1.000 Hours of Staring-similarity become too evident, a firm and catchy guitar emerges to make you hum along. Something like the album's dramaturgic peak. “Bourrasque” afterwards is the final tune. Mainly made of Simon's wonderful guitars, the songs starts with a lot of them piled up efficiently. After all, one singular Folk-melody survives just to drown in the sound of seagulls, oceanic hissing, noise and the distance echoes of Nicolas' and Simon's voices. More than just intriguing.
